Set the stage for safer play.

Pounce Play is designed for supervised enrichment. A few simple preparations can protect your cat, your device, and your home while keeping the hunt enjoyable.

Before every session

  1. Choose a stable surface. Place the device flat on the floor or another low, non-slip surface where it cannot fall. Avoid ledges, stands, stairs, or breakable surroundings.
  2. Remove cables and accessories. Unplug charging and wired-audio cables. Keep cords, adapters, small parts, and cases with loose pieces out of reach.
  3. Inspect the device. Do not use a device with cracked glass, sharp edges, a swollen battery, or unusual heat. A well-fitting protective case and intact screen protector are recommended.
  4. Set comfortable brightness and sound. The screen only needs enough contrast for the target to stand out. Begin quietly and increase sound only if your cat remains relaxed.
  5. Stay nearby. Watch the cat and the device for the entire session. Pounce Play is not intended for unattended use.
Never leave a charging cable connected during cat play. Stop immediately if your cat chews the device or case, becomes distressed, or plays so forcefully that the device moves.

During play

Let your cat choose whether to watch, approach, tap, or walk away. Do not place paws on the screen or force interaction. Use Apple Guided Access to keep the device restricted to Pounce Play, and use Cat Lock to hide controls inside the app.

Look for signs that the session should end: flattened ears, tail lashing, panting, biting, repeated frustration, escalating force, or attempts to escape. Some cats prefer brief, quiet sessions; others may enjoy more movement. Start short and learn your cat’s comfort level.

Heat, battery, and sound

Long sessions, high brightness, warm rooms, and thick cases can raise device temperature. Check the device periodically. If it feels unusually hot, the screen dims unexpectedly, or the system displays a temperature warning, stop the session and let it cool in a safe place. Never try to cool a device in a refrigerator or freezer.

iPad models do not provide the same haptic feedback available on supported iPhones. Pounce Play uses visual and audio feedback where device haptics are unavailable.

After play

  • End Cat Lock with the human exit gesture before handling settings.
  • Exit Guided Access using your device’s configured method.
  • Inspect the screen and case for damage.
  • Clean the device according to its manufacturer’s instructions, with it unplugged.
  • Give your cat an appropriate physical toy or treat if that helps complete the hunt.

Pounce Play is a recreational cat-play app. It is not veterinary advice, a medical device, a behavior assessment, or a replacement for physical exercise, rest, social interaction, or veterinary care.
